Writing for Pay: From Content Mills to Major Magazines (and Everything in Between)
Is This You?
You like to write. You’ve got a strong interest (or two) that you love explaining to others, or have ideas or information that you know others could benefit from. Perhaps you’ve already written a lot of blog posts or newsletter articles, but never really gotten paid what you wanted or amassed as many readers as you would have liked. But how do you move from writing for free to actually getting paid for it? How do you write for a larger audience? What is the process? What does it look like? Whether you want to write for magazines and websites to help build your business, or want to try your hand at freelance writing for its own sake, this course will help you find your way through the maze of writing for profit.
What’s included?
Three teleclasses describing the ins and outs of the freelance world, helping you determine the smartest choices to meet your specific needs. They will take place on Tuesdays–April 27, May 4th and May 11th–at 10am PST/1pm EST. Calls will be recorded and you’ll get a download link sent directly to your inbox. Here’s what we’ll cover:
Week 1
- An overview of paid online writing–so you’ll know what your options are.
- Different available online writing options with pros and cons–so you can make a more informed decision.
- Types of magazines: trade journals, consumer magazines and custom publications. We’ll delve into specifics, discussing the pros and cons of each option so you can find one that best meets your needs.
- Thinking outside the box: Less traditional ways to sell your writing.
- How to find magazines or websites on your topic of choice.
Week 2
- Help! What do I send? When to send a query letter (pitch or proposal) and what that even looks like.
- When to send a letter of introduction and when to send a complete manuscript.
- HOW to write a query letter, and where to find great samples.
- Clips (previous writing samples editors sometimes request): How to get them, what to do if you don’t have any (or have the wrong kind) and which ones to send.
Week 3
- Following Up: When to pick up the phone for the best results.
- How to Repitch: Handling rejection letters without getting mired in depression or angst.
- When to Pick Up the Phone (even though it’s scary)
