I am a freelance writer available for hire. Combat sports, food, ecology, holistic medicine, education and social justice issues are some of my favorite topics to cover. I also have extensive experience cooking up amazing bios or interviews. I love reviewing books, DVDs and events. I’ll even write press releases or bios for your entire staff. I normally charge anywhere from $.50 to $1.00/ word. However this is negotiable for non-profit organizations and special circumstances.
My combat sports coverage and analysis can be found on MMA HQ, MMA Opinion and Savage Science. Articles and interviews formerly found on 8Count News can be found at Mixed Martial Arts and More. Articles written for the now-defunct MMA Rated cannot be found online. Women’s MMA and the Elephant in the Room: Making Weight was printed in the Bleacher Report. Jamie Varner: Recovering and Looking to the Future can be found on MMA Madness. Fighting Back: womyn taking a physical approach to sexual assault was published in Sandpaper in 2002. My Tucson Q+A interview with Lyle Steffens can be found at the Tucson Weekly archives. My Aising “Ais the Bash” Daly interview is still on FighterGirls.com. You actually have to spend money to read my 2007 interviews with Roxanne Modafferi (for the The Performance Menu) and Tony Blauer (for the Crossfit Journal), as well as my interview with AZ Diamondbacks manual therapist Neil Rampe for the Performance Menu. And my interview with Krista Scott-Dixon (aka Mistress Krista) from stumptuous.com is in the print issue of Bitch Magazine, issue 45. I also write regularly for Ultimate MMA magazine.
Most of my nature writing is not available online. A Night With Nothing, an article about my survival trip to the Chiricahaus, is in the print edition of Sacred Fire Magazine, Issue Five. The Tao That Can Be Spoken: A Conversation With Ken Cohen is in Sacred Fire Magazine, Issue #3 (and reprinted in the Journal of Martial Arts and Healing Vol. 3, Issue 1, Summer 2008). The Political and the Sacred: A Conversation with Starhawk was in the print edition of Clamor Magazine Issue #7, February/March 2001.
Some informational pieces can be found at ehow.com. I wrote a how-to sugar scrub article for the Made With Love (d.i.y gift) section of Bust Magazine’s December ‘08 issue. As a National Teen Correspondent for the now-defunct Blue Jean Magazine from 1996-1998, I wrote about Big Mountain and about media bias, reviewed a bunch of zines and interviewedcomic artist Sarah Dyer (of Action Girl fame). Some pieces were published in the book Blue Jean: What Young Women are Thinking, Saying, and Doing (Blue Jean Press, 2001).
A bit of my more political writing is still available online, including an interview with media activist Renee Angle for the Tucson Weekly, a rant for the Weekly’s Obama issue (scroll down!) and an Open Letter to Kalle Lasn (editor of Adbusters Magazine) for the October ‘05 issue of the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. I also wrote about the Future of Tao.ca for Clamor Magazine Issue #18, January/February 2003 and about Food Not Bombs! for the Objector in Fall 1999. And I wrote a humorous defense of the Trix Rabbit for The Freakie Magnet: A Cereal Funzine, Issue 3, Spring 1995. It was later reprinted in MOO Juice, the best zine ever, by Britton Walters.
I am writing articles for a beautiful online food magazine, Spezzatino, which raises money for the Healthy Food Bank. You can order issues I’ve written for or am writing for (basil, coffee, pork) but all of the issues are great. I also sometimes send out my Spezzatino articles as bonuses.
You can still find two bad pieces of my poetry online: I walk from his dorm room and Today my home is on the road.
