Writer For Sale!

WRITER FOR SALE

Dynamic, bright, creative and resourceful writer available immediately for part-time or full-time work.

What I’m looking for:

I’m looking for writing work that is somewhat related to topics I am passionate about.

I can write about food politics in the style of one of my heroes, Michael Pollan. I can write about health and nutrition or physical fitness. I can write about mixed martial arts and BJJ or even more specifically, women’s mixed martial arts. I can write about environmental issues, gardening, wilderness awareness/survival, edible and medicinal plants, permaculture or endangered species. I can write about education, teaching and how the brain works. I can write heady social critique of current events. I can write about wonderful trips, specific business or events or programs. I can write reviews of books, DVDs, gyms or seminars. I can write compilations of resources available about a specific topic or area. I can do amazing interviews or describe a day in the life of a superstar.

I can write in a wide variety of formats: interviews, feature stories, weekly columns or profiles. I could interview an entire staff and write profiles. I could even help with proofreading or editing on any of the topics mentioned in addition to writing as part of a bigger project.

I don’t care how big or little each specific job is as long as I have a steady stream of assignments. And I want them to pay well—-at least $50 per assignment plus expenses. It will be for people who for the most part are just as passionate, creative, driven and idealistic as I am. My clients/bosses will be good communicators giving direct, honest feedback and suggestions.

How This Could Happen:

I could get one of the two copywriting positions I’ve applied for (one of which is online), or something I’ve yet to apply for.

I could meet web designers who want to hire me to take care of the content on the sites they design (and maybe even help update them or come up with regular content)

Someone could read my articles or web page and decide they want to hire me for an existing business, or for their own project.

I could find a posting on one of the many freelancing sites I sometimes peruse for an opening that ends up being a perfect fit.

I could make connections through places I find in the Writer’s Market and want to query that results in steady, ongoing work.

I could write columns that gain enough popularity that people want to syndicate them

I could start blogging on more specific things and get a huge amount of readers, thus spurring a book project with a nice advance

I could find someone else working on a project who wants me to be involved as a co-author

It could happen through connections I make from internships or J-school should I end up there

It could happen through referrals or word of mouth

It could happen in ways I haven’t thought up yet

My commitment:

Being extremely reliable.

Being low maintenance and easy to work with.

Meeting or exceeding deadlines and expectations.

Writing kick-ass articles on any topic given.

Being fair and honest and taking fact-checking seriously.

Making a referral if I feel I can’t do a fantastic job on a given assignment.

Using all of the skills I’ve acquired and resources available to me to be meticulous and thorough.

Writing from my heart so that my work really shines.

Addressing any concerns immediately.

Being a great communicator.

Putting a creative and unique flair to all of my work.

By the way, I can write about almost anything.

I have written about a ridiculously wide variety of topics in the past.

*You need not look further than this very site to find blog posts on everything from neuroscience to raw milk to cycling to eradicating buffelgrass to composting with worms to urban survival to the All Soul’s Procession to Roy Dean’s jiu jitsu DVDs to feats of physical strength and more.

*I have extensively covered mixed martial arts, with reviews of local promotions, interviews of top tier fighters, humor, opinion and more. I also write a weekly column on women’s mixed martial arts.

*I have written about health and fitness, including seminar reviews, gym reviews, DVD reviews, interviews and feature stories.

*I have written about social justice issues for magazines ranging from Spezzatino to the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest to Sandpaper to the Objector to Blue Jean Magazine. Topics have ranged from indigenous issues to media bias to food politics to homelessness and hunger.

*I have written about spiritual experiences, and even interviewed Taoist master Ken Cohen for Sacred Fire magazine. (The piece was later reprinted in the Journal of Martial Arts and Healing). I also interviewed Starhawk for Clamor magazine. But my spiritual writing is not all interviews. I wrote my own spiritual adventure story for Sacred Fire about a survival trip in the Chiricahaus.

*I wrote about how to make sugar scrubs for a d.i.y. gift section in Bust magazine’s holiday issue. I have many other gifts made with love up my sleeve to write about.

*I love covering media issues, whether it’s detecting media bias, promoting an event or interviewing a media activist or cartoonist.
